Of course it might have something to do with the fact that we give it away for free.....
That's right free, this is not a 'trial' offer, the product you download is not limited in capacity or in time meaning you can use it as long as you want and on as many projects as you want. As it is an installed piece of software rather than a hosted web platform, we can't change our minds later and introduce a charge once you are using it. This all makes sense but even we have been amazed by the rate at which users have been adopting and using it since launch in Feb 2005.
Reviewed in June 2007 Community Edition was given 4 out 5 by the reviewers at the popular project resources blogspot.

Benefits
Community Edition delivers the core PROJECT in a box benefits by helping you to improve the delivery of projects by the traditional measures of time, cost and quality.
Today though with projects being the way that most organisations deliver their activities and in particular with the accelerating adoption of projects as a way of business for SMEs and the service industry, additional benefits are being sought. Community Edition has been developed with these needs in mind and will also provide you with:
- No adoption/implementation threshold - a system that is free, very easy to implement, that can be populated using your existing project documentation and will be available for your use within seconds.
- Scalable and flexible system - Suitable for one to ten thousand projects but really limited to personal use or the central administration of small project teams. You can also evolve your approach to delivering projects by altering the template structure and contents (Community Edition only supports a single template).
- Organisational learning - Build closely around PRINCE2™ and with the OGC's Process maps, template documents and glossary included the methodology is reinforced on the job.
- User centric benefits - although built around a strong process framework, when the user is in the system it feels like the system supports the user and not the other way around. It has become common for PM systems to become the center of the business activity and the PM can feel like they are just feeding the system, leading to low motivation, not with PROJECT in a box.

Features
Community Edition provides the perfect blend of introduction level functionality. The section below addresses some of these in more detail.
- PRINCE2™ structure - You navigate your project using the process diagrams so familiar from the manual. Once at the required sub process the system will show you which documents and files you should be producing, reviewing or completing here.
- Document and file management - View, sign in and out individual files or whole documents using the very intuitive file explorer.
- Audit trail - View the audit trail for documents so that you can see what changes were made when and view the historic copies of the documents in question.
- Manage your whole project - So many PM systems are built to let you manage the project but the 'doing' of the project is achieved more traditionally. Not with Community Edition, the Specialist Products section lets you create your required project structure outside the management products and manage it all from the same interface, subject to the same audit trail. This is more limited than is supported by the Professional edition.
- Document Index - An alphabetic list of all the documents in the project to help you find the file when you can't remember which process it is used in!
- Export - You can export the latest version of every file used in your project. This collection of documents is packaged by the system for you into a folder with an HTML navigator enabling you to post it to your intranet, send to a colleague or archive on the completion of your project.
While clearly less function rich than the full commercial PROJECT in a box the Community Edition is aimed at bridging the gap from training to using PRINCE2™ and for organisations who want to see if a Project management system is for them without having to put their hand in their pocket.

In keeping with its ethos of keeping it simple the Community Edition is very easy to deploy. All you need is a Microsoft operating system W2K or newer and it can be installed on a desktop PC, a laptop or ever a server (for local use) if you should wish.
Users install the software themselves using the guided

exe, we provide email support for free although 99.85% of our Community
Edition installs have not even required phone or email support because
of our extensive multi platform testing undertaken.
Due to the terms of our Licence to distribute Community Edition we don't provide any commercial implementation consultancy or training around this product.
