KB2210050 Version 2.2 Upgrade Guide

This article provides an overview of patching a PROJECT in a box installation from Version 2.1 to Version 2.2. Please note that patches must be applied incrementally e.g. if your installation is at Version 2.0 you must patch to 2.1 then 2.2. All downloads are available from your client page.

System Overview

PROJECT in a box (PIAB) is a client-server application consisting of:

  • An ASP.NET web services application ('piabws')
  • An ASP.NET web application ('Enterprise Hub')
  • A SQL Server 2005 or 2000 database ('piab')
  • A .NET Windows client application that connects to the service using web services (http/https).

Preparation and Roll-back

  • Backup the entire PIAB installation folder e.g. Program Files\PROJECT in a box Professional
  • Backup the 'piab' SQL database, either using your system tools or the backup feature in the 'PROJECT in a box Server' program.

Rollback consists of restoring the original installation folder and restoring the 'piab' database from backup file.

Patching the Server

The PIAB server consists of an ASP.NET web and web services application and a SQL server database called 'piab'. The default install folder is Program Files\PROJECT in a box Professional

Step 1 - Run the Server Upgrade Patch

Download the following patch installer and run it on the server. This updates the web and web services application files.

When you run the patch it will place a timestamped log file in the install folder as below. This file contains useful information about the progress of the patch and should be retained for reference and troubleshooting.

Step 2 - Run the SQL Upgrade Scripts

If your SQL Server is on a remote PC then it is likely that you will need to apply the SQL scripts separately. Navigate to the folder:

Program Files\PROJECT in a box Professional\patch-*

The SQL upgrade scripts are as follows (in order of how they should be applied):

  • piab-2.2.1-table.sql
  • piab-2.2.1-sproc.sql
  • piab-2.2.1-view.sql

You can run these with the Microsoft SQL management tools (e.g. Enterprise Manager) or edit and run the command scripts provided for SQL Server 2005 or 2000 respectively.

  • sql-update.cmd
  • sql-update-2000.cmd

Patching the Clients

The PIAB client is a .NET Windows Application, consisting of a set of folders and files normally located on the client PC in folder:

Program Files\PROJECT in a box Professional

Option 1 - Run Upgrade Client Patch

The clients can be upgraded individually using the following client upgrade patch. These do not need to be applied incrementally.

Option 2 - Client Deployment Page

An alternative is to prepare and deploy the client using a web page. The PIAB client is a files-only, XCOPY type installation and can be deployed as a self extracting download. For more details please see: KB2310032 Client Deployment

  • The location of the web services application folder is: Program Files\PROJECT in a box Professional\piabws
  • The location of the Enterprise Hub web application folder is: Program Files\PROJECT in a box Professional\piabhub
  • Out-of-date files are written to the 'saved' folder during the patch run.
