Server can be run on a Desktop PC for a small team or a split infrastructure to meet the practices of the largest corporate, the choice is yours and we offer unparalleled support to match your preferences.
Server is the starting point of your PROJECT in a box
implementation. It hosts all your project documents and all
the
information about user permissions. The Server also acts as
the
deployment host with a webpage from which the users can download the
client interfaces they want to use. Finally the server is the
centre of customisation activities with Method Manager and your method
templates and integration with the receipt of auto checked in files from
other data providers and the API for integration of functionality.
Should you want to segment your projects or have Chinese walls around
sensitive projects you can have multiple servers operating on the same
network, it is also common for organisations who are heavily
customising their method templates to have a separate test server for
the activity.

Technology
The PROJECT in a box application uses entirely .NET
webservices to
communicate between server and clients and this means that it can be
used over the web just as well as over a company network if the
webserver part of the Server has external ports.
The Server uses Microsoft SQL server 2000 or 2005 as a host database
and can be operated on the free MS SQLexpress 2005 version for up to
thirty users which helps keep the cost of implementation down.
In
fact many organisations host the Server on a standard desktop PC as a
quick and cost effective approach to implementation and we even provide
a Server tool application to administrate the server in these
environments where SQL management tools are often not available.
At the other extreme our larger clients often split the server over
their infrastructure with the database sharing an existing SQL Server,
the application residing on a shared application server with the file
store and Method template library in the file server farm.
The PROJECT in a box API offers you the chance to integrate any of the
PROJECT in a box functionality into your Enterprise information systems
such as sharepoint. With standard xml based web services this
is
straightforward technology for you to integrate yourselves or we can
provide consultancy support if required.
Working with the clients
Once you have your server in place you can licence this with any combination of Manager and Team Clients and even add the Enterprise Hub to optimise the access required to your projects.

Deployment
Server itself is deployed easily to its host computer(s) with an installer and full documentation, we also provide phone, email and remote access assistance as part of the support service to give you full peace of mind.
Your Team and Manager licences can be allocated and reallocated between your users by an administrator to allow you maximum benefit from the licences you have purchased. As the licence information is held on your server the clients can be used in many different ways:
- Installed for long term frequent use on a desktop PC;
- Pulled down from the server and installed for single use on a colleagues or meeting room PC while answering a particular question or for a meeting;
- Operated from a portable data device such as a USB stick which enables you to carry all your files with you and connect from any PC with web access back to your server.

[Top]Supporting Project Migration from the Community Edition
We know that many of our Community Edition users upgrade to PROJECT in a box to take advantage of the additional benefits, in particular sharing their projects with their colleagues, and want to transfer their existing projects with them.
To help with this we provide a Data Tool utility which is available from the customers Download Centre. The Data Tool lets the user migrate their projects from Community Edition to PROJECT in a box and between different PROJECT in a box servers.
